Automotive Grade Linux at Automotive World Tokyo 2026

Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) took center stage at Automotive World Japan 2026 in Tokyo. The community showcased production-ready Software-Defined Vehicle (SoDeV) demonstrations

Bringing Open Automotive Standards to Tokyo

The shift toward Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) requires decoupling software from physical hardware while reducing stack fragmentation across the industry. At Automotive World Japan 2026 in Tokyo, Automotive Grade Linux demonstrated how open source software provides the standard baseline OEMs and Tier-1s need to accelerate time-to-market.

Live from the show floor, the AGL team reconnected with community members, met with engineering teams, and demonstrated real-world SoDeV implementations.

Tech Spotlight: AGL SoDeV Demonstrating RISC-V & Flutter HMI

A key highlight of AGL’s technical showcase was a demonstration of the AGL Unified Code Base (UCB) running directly on open RISC-V silicon, proving the architecture-agnostic flexibility of the platform.

In an onsite walkthrough video shared during the event, Walt Miner provided a deep dive into the stack:

  • Open Silicon Target: Running natively on the StarFive VisionFive 2 board (RISC-V ISA).
  • Core Distribution: Powered by the Yocto-based AGL Unified Code Base (UCB)—a fully free and open-source distribution.
  • Flutter HMI Framework: Featuring a modern Flutter-based home screen. While Flutter was originally created by Google, Toyota has invested heavily in developing a generic, open-source Flutter embedder for AGL that any automaker or supplier can adopt.
  • In-Vehicle Control Modules: Fully functional applications for HVAC (climate control, A/C, sync), media playback, and system settings.
  • Production-Grade Extensibility: Designed to support digital instrument clusters and telematics gateways out of the box.

“What we have with the unified codebase here is a Yocto-based distribution that is free and open source that anyone can play with… All of this is available for anyone to freely download, modify the UI, and add to it.”

— Walt Miner, Director of Community, AGL
