The automotive industry took strides towards industry-wide adoption of open source software in 2025. After years of experimentation, proof-of-concept work, and teams working in parallel rather than in tandem, we’re shifting towards collaboration in production, looking ahead at the ways open source software will be deployed, maintained, and evolve in production environments.
The AGL community made great strides in 2025, working together to add new features and functionalities to the production-ready AGL platform.
AGL Highlights from 2025
SoDeV Reference Platform
AGL recently announced the launch of SoDeV, a new open source reference platform that enables software-first development to accelerate software-defined vehicles (SDV). SoDeV supports ECU consolidation, virtualization, hardware abstraction, and cloud integration, providing a flexible foundation for developing modern in-vehicle architectures.
SoDeV combines the AGL Unified Code Base with open source components into a single package, including VirtIO, Xen, and Zephyr, removing the need for developers to perform complex software integrations and providing a stable environment that’s easy to build and deploy from. This is a key step forward in simplifying the way that people build, update, and deploy new SDV technologies.
Developed by the AGL SDV Expert Group, including Panasonic Automotive Systems, Honda, Toyota, Mazda, AISIN, and Renesas, SoDeV will be available in early 2026.
To learn more about SoDeV and get involved in the community, join the AGL SDV Expert Group (SDV EG), which is responsible for the design and implementation of virtualization solutions for AGL.
Open Source Program Office (OSPO) Publications
As open source continues to integrate with more applications across automotive organizations, the role of the Open Source Program Office (OSPO) becomes increasingly pivotal to the success of widespread open source adoption. Organizing open source activities through an OSPO can help executives better understand the business value of open source while streamlining the process for engineers to use and contribute to open source projects.
Led by Toyota, the AGL Open Source Program Office Expert Group (OSPO EG) was launched in 2024 to enable automakers to share information and develop best practices that can help other automakers establish their own OSPOs.
In 2025, the AGL OSPO-EG developed assets for the community to enable easier open source participation and contribution. These assets include:
- OSPO Promotion Deck: showcasing the value of open source to an organization. It provides a template that teams can customize as needed.
- Automotive OSPO Showcase: providing real business examples of OSPOs in the automotive industry. This includes details on structure, scale, and functions in open source communities.
- OSS Contribution – Illusion and Reality Deck: explaining how to contribute to open source, and includes tips for removing barriers to entry.
Join the conversation in our open AGL OSPO-EG meetings to help us build more resources for the community. AGL is committed to enabling open source adoption, and we’ll continue to build resources with our Expert Groups that help organizations effectively participate in collaborative development.
Terrific Trout Released
2025 marked the 20th major release of the AGL Unified Code Base (UCB), Terrific Trout. With the new release, we continued to build on our open and production-ready platform that shows a level of consistency, stability, and platform maturity. There’s a long list of updates that came with the release of 20.0, which you can check out in the blog post and in the Terrific Trout release notes.
Member News
Our members are what make the community at AGL. They drive the explorative innovation of the automotive industry, and together, we’re at the forefront. Looking back at 2025, there were some big innovations across some of our AGL members and adjacent organizations.
Toyota Releases a New Multimedia System on AGL
Toyota announced the release of a new IVI experience with enhanced network connectivity, more intuitive and customizable design, quicker voice assistant response, a drive recorder, and more—all with a system platform architecture built on AGL.
Suzuki is using Qt and AGL for their Digital Cockpit
Suzuki chose the Qt framework running on the AGL platform to power the digital cockpit for their first EV model, e Vitara. The Qt Group, a long-time member of AGL, provides a framework optimized to run on AGL, with Suzuki stating that they wanted to build and deploy on a common, industry-standard platform, rather than starting from scratch.
InstantX Demonstrates Real-Time Vehicle Data Exchange with AGL
InstantX, an open source project that is part of LF Edge, an umbrella organization under the Linux Foundation, demonstrated an initial Proof of Concept (POC) for enabling Vehicle-to-Cloud (V2C) communication by integrating InstantX and AGL. Read more about the use case here.
